The origin of the name Padilla
Padilla (de Padilla) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the town and manor of Padilla (Padilla de Abajo / Padilla de Arriba) in Burgos, Old Castile (from Spanish padilla, meaning "bread pan" or "baking shovel"). Originating during the 11th century, the House of Padilla rose to supreme aristocracy as Counts of Santa Gadea, Masters of the Order of Calatrava, and Royal Marshals of Castile. The dynasty exerted immense influence over Castilian history, producing Queen Consorts, grand admirals, and military commanders.
The symbolism of the Padilla coat of arms
Visually striking and noble, the Padilla coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three upright golden padillas (pan-shovels used for baking bread) arranged in pale, each flanked by golden crescents. In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three golden padillas serve as an iconic canting emblem representing sustenance, manorial provision, agricultural abundance, and holding together royal supplies. The golden crescents denote enlightenment, hopeful renewal, and noble elevation. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble standing and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
