The origin of the name Owens

Owens is an ancient Welsh patronymic surname meaning "son of Owen" (derived from Welsh Owain, stemming from Latin Eugenius, meaning "well-born" or "noble warrior"). Tracing royal lineage from ancient Welsh princes of Powys and Gwynedd—most notably Owain Gwynedd and Owain Glyndŵr—the House of Owens established influential seats across Montgomeryshire, Anglesey, and Shropshire. Ruling as High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and judges, members of the family exerted major influence throughout Wales and England.

The symbolism of the Owens coat of arms

Commanding and noble, the Owens coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black lion rampant. In classical Welsh heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black lion rampant represents supreme bravery, deep wisdom, dignity, and unyielding constancy under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation, light, and royal favor. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s 16th-century Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
