The origin of the name O'Neill
O'Neill is one of Ireland's most royal Gaelic surnames, derived from Ó Néill, meaning "descendant of Niall." The clan traces its unbroken lineage to Niall Noígíallach (Niall of the Nine Hostages), 5th-century High King of Ireland. Ruling as High Kings of Ireland and Earls of Tyrone, the lineage defended Gaelic sovereignty across Ulster for centuries. During Anglo-Irish integration and emigration, the O' prefix was often set aside, restored by many during the Gaelic Revival.
The symbolism of the O'Neill coat of arms
The coat of arms features an argent (silver) shield charged with the legendary Lámh Dhearg (Red Hand of Ulster) supported by two gules (red) lions rampant, flanked by three red stars in chief and a salmon swimming in wavy blue waters at base. In heraldry, argent signifies purity, while gules represents warrior fortitude.
The Red Hand of Ulster and rampant lions denote sovereign leadership and fierce bravery, while the salmon represents Gaelic wisdom and foresight.
Surmounting the shield, the crest displays an armored arm holding a silver sword erect from a golden coronet. The golden motto scroll reads Lámh dearg Éireann abú ("The Red Hand of Ireland to victory"). Recorded in the Office of Ulster King of Arms.
