The origin of the name Olson
Olson (Olsen) is an ancient Scandinavian patronymic surname meaning "son of Ole" or "son of Olaf" (derived from Old Norse Óláfr, composed of án, meaning "ancestor," and leifr, meaning "heir" or "relic"—thus "ancestor's descendant"). Widespread across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, the lineage produced patrician merchants, naval officers, and civic leaders. Bringing their seafaring tradition across the globe, families bearing the Olson name played a major role in Nordic settlement throughout North America and Western Europe.
The symbolism of the Olson coat of arms
Visually organic and symbolic, the Olson coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central rooted oak tree stump sprouting green oak leaves and acorns, set between four red hearts (two in chief, two in base). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and judicial purity. The central oak tree stump with fresh green leaves and acorns represents ancient family roots, resilience, rebirth out of hardship, and enduring vitality. The four red hearts signify profound sincerity, family devotion, charity, and steadfast fidelity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red heart set between two silver wings, symbolising elevated affection, spiritual protection, and peace. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Scandinavian armorial registers and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
