The origin of the name O'Loughlin

O'Loughlin (O'Lochlainn) is an ancient royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Lochlainn (meaning "descendant of Lochlann," the Gaelic term for Scandinavia or "land of fjords"). Ruling as Chieftains of Corcomroe in northern County Clare (The Burren) and tracing descent from High Kings of Ireland, the family commanded coastal territories, mountain passes, and monastic sanctuaries across Munster and Connacht.

The symbolism of the O'Loughlin coat of arms

Visually striking and martial, this O'Loughlin coat of arms features a red shield charged with a medieval archer in full steel armor and helmet, drawing a wooden bow with an arrow aimed upward, bearing a leather quiver with silver-fletched arrows on his back. In Gaelic heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial fortitude, courage, and sacrifice, while the archer drawing a bow represents sharp precision, strategic vigilance, steadfast defense of domain, and warrior readiness. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a steel naval anchor, symbolising steadfast stability, faith, and ocean defense. Below, the motto scroll displays In hoc signo vinces, translating to "In this sign you shall conquer." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle.
