The origin of the name O'Keane
O'Keane (O'Cahan / Keane) is a primary historical spelling variant of the royal Gaelic Irish clan surname Ó Catháin (derived from cath, meaning "battle" or "courageous warrior"). Ruling as Sovereign Princes of Limavady in County Londonderry, the O'Cahans/O'Keanes were hereditary inaugurators of the O'Neill High Kings of Ulster at Tullahoge. Commanding vast coastal lordships and stone fortresses like Dungiven Castle, the family played a central role in northern Irish history as recorded in the Annals of Ulster.
The symbolism of the O'Keane coat of arms
Visually elaborate and royal, the O'Keane coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with two silver rearing horses flanking an upright silver hand with a crescent moon beneath, set beneath three silver stars in chief. In the center rests an inescutcheon containing a red Celtic cross on white, green oak tree, three silver lizards, and a silver salmon swimming in base. In Gaelic heraldry, the blue field denotes loyalty and faith. The rearing silver horses represent speed and noble chivalry, while the upright hand, crescent, and stars signify sacred pledges, northern Gaelic roots, and divine guidance. The central symbols represent Christian devotion, ancient land tenure, wisdom, and river lordship (Éigne). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a seated leopard or cat-a-mountain, symbolising composed dignity until provoked. Below, the motto scroll displays Felis semulcta mitis, translating to "The stroked cat is gentle." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle.
