The origin of the name O'Grady

O'Grady (Grady) is a royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Grádaigh (from gráda, meaning "illustrious," "noble," or "famous warrior"). Ruling as Sovereign Chieftains of Cenél Dúnchada in County Clare and establishing extensive landed baronies at Kilballyowen in County Limerick, the O'Gradys trace direct royal descent from the ancient Thomond dynasties. Holding respected standing across Munster, the clan produced High Sheriffs, judges, and military leaders.

The symbolism of the O'Grady coat of arms

Commanding and heraldically rare, the O'Grady coat of arms features a shield partitioned vertically per pale in red and black (sable), charged with three walking lions guardant in pale (lions passant guardant) counterchanged in silver and gold (white on the red side, yellow on the black side). In Gaelic heraldry, the red and black field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, deep wisdom, and unyielding constancy under trial. The three walking lions guardant represent supreme bravery, heroic watchfulness, noble dignity, and royal Thomond alignment. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver horse's head bridled and erased, symbolising high spirit, speed, fidelity, and readiness for battle. Below, the motto scroll displays Vulneratus non victus, translating to "Wounded but not vanquished." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
