The origin of the name O'Flynn
O'Flynn (Flynn) is an ancient Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Floinn (from flann, meaning "ruddy" or "red-complexioned warrior"). Establishing three powerful independent septs across Ireland—in Muskerry (County Cork), Roscommon (Síl Maelruain), and Antrim (Uí Tuirtre along Lough Neagh)—the O'Flynns were hereditary chieftains, scholars, and landholders. Renowned for their hospitality and defense of native baronies, the family's history is preserved in the Annals of Ulster.
The symbolism of the O'Flynn coat of arms
Visually rich and symbolic, the O'Flynn coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a walking argent / silver or white wolf (wolf passant), set beneath three golden coins or bezants in chief, each bearing a lion or beast's head. In classical Gaelic heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the silver walking wolf represents fierce martial courage, stealth, acute vigilance, and untamed protection of clan lands. The three golden coins in chief signify generosity, manorial wealth, and distinguished service across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a bare arm issuing vertically holding a green serpent coiled around it, symbolising armed readiness, strategic wisdom, healing, and victory over adversity. Below, the motto scroll displays Honor praemium virtutis est, translating to "Honor is the reward of virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle.
