The origin of the name O'Farrell

O'Farrell (Farrell) is one of the premier royal Gaelic Irish clan surnames, derived from Ó Fearghail (composed of fear, meaning "man," and gal, meaning "valor"—thus "man of heroic valor"). Ruling as Sovereign Princes and Lords of Annaly (Anghaile), the clan commanded the entire region of modern-day County Longford from their royal seat at Longford Castle. Dominating midland Irish politics for over six centuries, the O'Farrells produced celebrated chieftains, military commanders, and churchmen recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.

The symbolism of the O'Farrell coat of arms

Commanding and vibrant, the O'Farrell coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central golden lion rampant. In Gaelic heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in Annaly and Longford soil, while the central golden lion rampant represents supreme courage, royal Gaelic leadership, and heroic spirit. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a running dark greyhound with a golden crown around its neck, serving as a famous emblem of swiftness, acute alertness, loyal devotion, and relentless pursuit in defense of clan territory. Below, the motto scroll displays Cú reabtha, translating from Irish Gaelic to "The tearing hound" (referring to the legendary greyhound crest of Annaly). The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
