The origin of the name O'Dwyer
O'Dwyer (Dwyer) is a legendary royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Dubhir or Ó Duibhir (meaning "descendant of Dubhir," from dubh, meaning "dark," and odhar, meaning "swarthy" or "dark-complexioned warrior"). Ruling as Sovereign Lords of Kilnamanagh in County Tipperary, the O'Dwyers held absolute lordship over the Slieve Felim mountain baronies from their ancestral strongholds at Moyaliffe Castle and Castleiny. Defending Tipperary through centuries of medieval conflict, the clan produced renowned chieftains, patriots, and military generals in the Irish Brigade.
The symbolism of the O'Dwyer coat of arms
Visually pure and aristocratic, the O'Dwyer coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central red lion rampant, set between three black ermine spots (two in chief, one in base). In Gaelic heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central red lion rampant represents supreme bravery, royal Kilnamanagh command, and warrior fortitude. The three black ermine spots denote unblemished honor, high nobility, and steadfast integrity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
