O'Dempsey (Dempsey) is a legendary royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Diomasaigh (from diomasach, meaning "proud," "haughty," or "courageous warrior"). Ruling as Sovereign Lords of Clanmaliere (Clann Maoilughra) across County Offaly and Laois, the O'Dempseys held absolute lordship over their ancient kingdom along the River Barrow from their strongholds at Philipstown and Ballybrittas Castle. Renowned for their formidable cavalry and fierce independence, the clan's history is recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The symbolism of the O'Dempsey coat of arms
Commanding and martial, the O'Dempsey coat of arms features a red shield charged with a central argent / silver or white lion rampant, set between two upright silver steel swords with golden hilts in base. In Gaelic heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the silver lion rampant represents supreme bravery, royal Clanmaliere leadership, and unblemished judicial purity. The two upright silver steel swords denote armed readiness, justice, and fierce defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red lion rampant holding a silver steel sword erect, reinforcing victorious command and military valor. Below, the motto scroll displays Elatum a Deo non deprimat, translating to "Whom God has raised up, let no one depress."
