The origin of the name O’Connor

The surname O'Connor is one of the most celebrated and historic royal patronymics in Irish history, deriving from the Gaelic Ó Conchobhair (meaning "descendant of Conchobhar"). The ancient personal name Conchobhar is composed of the Celtic elements con, denoting a "hound" or "wolf" (a traditional emblem of warrior nobility in Gaelic folklore), and cobhar, meaning "desire", "aid", or "favour"—translating broadly as "lover of hounds" or "champion warrior". The lineage gave rise to five distinct royal septs across Ireland, most notably the Ó Conchobhair Donn of Connacht, who ruled as provincial kings and provided the final High Kings of Ireland—most famously Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair and his son Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair—prior to the Anglo-Norman invasion in the twelfth century. Additional major sovereign branches included O’Connor Kerry, O'Connor Offaly, O’Connor Sligo, and O’Connor Corcomroe. Maintaining an unbroken genealogical record for over a millennium, the O’Connor family remains one of the most eminent surviving dynasties of native Irish royalty.

This variant belongs exclusively to the O’Connor of Corcomroe sept, based in the northern region of County Clare (formerly known as the territory of Corcomruadh). This independent branch evolved separately from Conchobhar, Lord of Corcomroe, who died in 1002 AD. The clan held extensive land and political sway in County Clare until 1584, when English confiscations reduced their territory. Their military activities are recorded in medieval texts, most notably their decisive intervention at the Battle of Dysert O'Dea in 1318 AD under the leadership of Fedhlim O'Connor.
