The origin of the name O’Connell

O'Connell is a historic Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Conaill, stemming from con (hound or wolf) and gal (valour), meaning "strong as a hound" or "valiant warrior." The principal sept held the ancient lordship of Iveragh in County Kerry, while other distinct branches held land in County Galway and County Limerick. Renowned throughout Irish history as clan chiefs, military leaders, and statesmen, the family was recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters and medieval land surveys.

The symbolism of the O’Connell coat of arms

Rich in Gaelic symbolism, the O’Connell shield features a green lower section and an argent / silver or white upper section, charged with a central standing stag (trippant) set between three green and silver shamrocks. In heraldry, the green and argent / silver or white sections represent the natural landscape of Ireland, peace, and renewal. The central stag symbolises high wisdom, harmony, and peace, while the three shamrocks denote steadfast faith and ancestral heritage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a stag's head. Below, the motto scroll displays Ciall agus neart, translating from Irish to "Wisdom and strength." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
