The origin of the name Ochoa

Ochoa (de Ochoa) is an ancient Basque and Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the Basque word otsoa (meaning "wolf"). Originating in the rugged mountain provinces of Biscay (Bizkaia), Gipuzkoa, and Navarre during the early Middle Ages, the House of Ochoa established prominent ancestral seats as Lords of Jauregui and Knights of Santiago. Playing a crucial role in the Reconquista, members of the family served as royal magistrates, naval commanders, and conquistadors across Spain and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Ochoa coat of arms

Visually pure and protective, the Ochoa coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with two walking black wolves in pale (lobos pasantes: one above the other). The inner shield is set within a deep blue border (bordure) charged with eight golden six-pointed stars (mullets). In Iberian heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the two walking black wolves represent fierce martial courage, stealth, acute watchfulness, and untamed defense of domain. The deep blue bordure with eight golden stars denotes loyalty, truth, divine guidance, celestial light, and commemoration of victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Basque and Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
