The O’Brien surname (Irish: Ó Briain) is deeply rooted in the storied history of the powerful Dál gCais clan from southwest Ireland. Meaning “descendant of Brian,” it pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Brian Boru, the legendary High King of Ireland. Centered in Thomond—now Clare and Limerick—the O’Briens rose to prominence as one of Ireland’s most influential royal families, shaping regional history over several centuries.

Emerging after the death of Brian Boru in 1014, the name Ó Briain was adopted by his descendants to affirm their direct lineage to the High King. Their ancestry extends further back through the Dál gCais, a Gaelic dynasty traditionally linked to the ancient chieftain Cormac Cas. This profound heritage positions the O’Brien family among Ireland’s most historic and respected lineages.

The O’Brien family coat of arms were first officially recorded and recognized on July 1, 1543. This milestone occurred during a pivotal transition in Irish history. Murrough O’Brien, the last ruling Gaelic King of Thomond (and a direct descendant of the 11th-century High King Brian Boru), traveled to Greenwich Palace to surrender his sovereign rights to King Henry VIII of England. Under the Tudor policy known as "Surrender and Regrant," O'Brien yielded his traditional kingdom and was in turn created the 1st Earl of Thomond and Baron Inchiquin.

The red shield features three lions arranged vertically—symbolising courage, authority, and nobility. Above the shield, the crest displays a hand clutching a dagger signifying strength bestowed from above—often interpreted as divine sanction or rightful authority. It closely aligns with the family motto, “Lámh láidir in uachtar”, which translates to “the strong hand uppermost.”
