The Ó Ceallaigh family crest is a distinguished Irish coat of arms, deeply connected to the Ó Ceallaigh (O’Kelly) sept of Uí Maine in County Galway. It symbolizes a heritage of noble status, a rich historical background, and links to events dating back to the 11th century.

At the centre of the crest stands a triple-towered castle, representing strength, authority, and the family’s historical role as rulers of Uí Maine. Often depicted with chains descending from the battlements, sometimes grasped by two silver lions, these elements emphasize themes of power and protection. This imagery closely aligns with the family motto “Turris Fortis Mihi Deus” — “God is my strong tower.”

Perched atop the crest is a figure that may initially resemble a fox but is, in fact, a mythical creature known as an Enfield. This unique heraldic beast is exclusive to Irish symbolism and associated specifically with the O’Kelly clan. It combines distinctive features: the head of a fox, the chest of a greyhound, the forelegs of an eagle, and the body of a wolf or lion. The Enfield embodies qualities such as cunning, vigilance, and strength.

Legend holds that the Enfield appeared following the death of Tadhg Mór Ua Cellaigh at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, standing guard over his body until his followers retrieved it. This tale has cemented the Enfield as a lasting emblem of the family’s legacy.

The crest itself evolved over many centuries, with formal heraldic documentation emerging around the 14th century, later recorded by the Ulster King of Arms. Though there are variations among different branches of the Kelly family, the tower and the Enfield remain the most consistent and recognizable symbols, representing both heritage and identity.

The surname Ó Ceallaigh was anglicised to O’Kelly, Kelly, and Kelley following the Anglo-Norman invasion of parts of Ireland in the 12th century. This name primarily originates from the Kings of Uí Maine and is an anglicised form of several older Irish names, particularly Ó Ceallaigh, which means “descendant of Ceallach.” The name Ceallach has been interpreted as “frequenting churches” or occasionally “warrior.” In other contexts, Kelly is an anglicisation of Ó Cadhla, meaning “descendant of Cadhla.” Additionally, some Kelly families trace their lineage to the Clan Brasil Mac Coolechan of the Ulaid.

The Kelly surname is widespread, especially throughout Ireland, Galloway, and the Isle of Man, a distribution influenced in part by Irish emigration during the Great Famine. Including all variants—Kelly, O’Kelly, Kelley, Kellie, and Ó Ceallaigh—the name ranks as the most prevalent surname in Ireland, with approximately half a million bearers worldwide. The surname developed independently in various regions, including parts of Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall, and possibly Antrim.
