Legend holds that the Enfield appeared following the death of Tadhg Mór Ua Cellaigh at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, standing guard over his body until his followers retrieved it. This tale has cemented the Enfield as a lasting emblem of the family’s legacy.

The crest itself evolved over many centuries, with formal heraldic documentation emerging around the 14th century, later recorded by the Ulster King of Arms.
