The origin of the name Norris
Norris is a distinguished surname of Anglo-Norman origin, deriving from the Old French norreis (meaning "northerner" or someone from the north) or the occupational term norrice ("nurse" or "foster parent"). Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, early branches established prominent manorial seats across Lancashire (most famously at historic Speke Hall near Liverpool), Berkshire, and Norfolk. Historical charters document Alain le Norreis in 12th-century Lancashire court rolls and Robert le Norreys in the 1273 Hundred Rolls.
The symbolism of the Norris coat of arms
