The origin of the name Nolan

Nolan (O'Nolan) is a legendary royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Nualláin (meaning "descendant of Nuallán," from nuall, meaning "famous," "noble," or "shouting champion"). Ruling as Sovereign Princes of Olea (Uí Nualláin) in County Carlow, the clan held hereditary chieftainship over extensive midland territories, recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters as defenders of Leinster. Branches of the sept also established influential seats in County Tipperary and Mayo.

The symbolism of the Nolan coat of arms

Visually complex and sacred, the Nolan coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central red cross (St. George's cross). Each quadrant contains an upright silver steel sword with a golden hilt. The central red cross is charged with a walking silver lion in the center, flanked by four blue and silver birds (martlets/doves). In Gaelic heraldry, the silver shield and red cross symbolise sincerity, peace, and knightly sacrifice. The four silver swords denote armed readiness and defense in all four directions, while the central silver lion represents supreme bravery and royal Gaelic leadership. The four blue birds signify peaceful ascension, swift intellect, and good tidings. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a blue and silver bird resting, symbolising divine protection and peace. Below, the motto scroll displays Cor unum, via una, translating to "One heart, one way." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
