The origin of the name Neilson
Neilson is a distinguished Scottish surname of ancient patronymic origin, deriving from the Gaelic Mac Neacail or Mac Néill (meaning "son of Neil"). The principal historical seat of the Neilson family was established at Craigcaffie in the parish of Inch, Wigtownshire (Galloway), where the clan held feudal lands under royal charter from the 14th century onward. Early charters document John Neilson of Craigcaffie receiving land grants from King Robert III in 1392.
The symbolism of the Neilson coat of arms
The Neilson coat of arms displays an argent (silver) shield charged with a golden or pile rising from the base, bearing an erect silver sword and flanked in chief by two gules (red) open dexter hands erect. In classical heraldry, argent denotes peace and sincerity, while gules represents warrior fortitude and magnanimity.
The two red hands erect symbolize pledged faith, open sincerity, and fierce readiness in defense of kin. The central sword erect represents unyielding justice, chivalric honor, and steadfast royal service.
Positioned above the shield, the crest features a golden coronet with rich red and silver mantling. The golden motto ribbon displays the Latin His Regi Servitium ("Service to the King"). Officially cataloged in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (Court of the Lord Lyon).
