The origin of the name Newman

Newman is an ancient English status surname derived from Old English niwe-mann (meaning "newcomer," "stranger," or "newly settled tenant of a manorial estate"). Originating during the Saxon era and expanding rapidly across Devon (Mamhead), Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Newman rose to prominent landed standing as High Sheriffs, magistrates, and churchmen. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (Robert le Niweman).

The symbolism of the Newman coat of arms

Commanding and noble, the Newman coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three argent / silver or white lions rampant (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three silver lions rampant represent supreme courage, heroic leadership, unblemished judicial purity, and noble protection of family lands across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Devon and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Historical figures

Lady Mary Newman (17th Century): English gentlewoman recorded in Devon land charters.
Saint John Henry Newman (1801–1890): Celebrated English cardinal, theologian, scholar, and canonized saint.
