The origin of the name Neal

Neal is an honored Anglo-Norman surname brought to England following the 1066 Conquest. Derived from the Old French Neel or Nigel (itself adapted from Latin Nigellus), the family held feudal manors across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire. Early entries in historical rolls include Richard Nel in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire and John Neale in 14th-century land grants during the reign of King Edward III.

The symbolism of the Neal coat of arms

The Neal coat of arms features an argent (silver) shield charged with a green oak tree eradicated (showing its ancient exposed roots), intersected by a wavy azure (blue) river fess bearing golden acorns. In classical heraldry, argent signifies peace, purity, and sincerity, while azure represents truth and steadfast loyalty.

The oak tree symbolizes unyielding strength, endurance, deep ancestral roots, and longevity, while its exposed roots represent foundational heritage. The wavy blue fess and acorns signify vital passage, growth, and rich promise for future generations.

Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an oak leaf branch with acorns resting upon a blue and silver torse. Framed by fluid blue and silver mantling, this armorial design is cataloged in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory for the Anglo-Norman Neal lineage.
