Neal (Irish origin) is a venerable Gaelic surname derived from Ó Néill or Mac Néill, meaning "descendant of Niall." The lineage traces its royal ancestry directly to Niall Noígíallach (Niall of the Nine Hostages), the legendary 5th-century High King of Ireland. Establishing powerful dynastic seats across Ulster—most notably in Tyrone and Antrim—the Neal sept was renowned for defending Gaelic sovereignty during medieval struggles against Norman and Tudor expansion.

The symbolism of the Neal coat of arms

The Neal coat of arms features an argent (silver) shield charged with the legendary Lámh Dhearg (Red Hand of Ulster) supported by two gules (red) lions rampant, flanked by three red stars in chief and a salmon swimming in wavy blue waters at base.
