The origin of the name Navarro

Navarro (de Navarro) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname indicating geographic origin from the historic Kingdom of Navarre (Navarra, from Basque nafarroa, meaning "high plain near mountains"). Originating in the Pyrenean mountain realm during the 9th century, the House of Navarro held premier standing as Counts of Oliveto, royal military commanders, and Grand Chancellors. Playing a central role in the Reconquista and the defense of the kingdom, branches of the lineage expanded across Aragon, Castile, Andalusia, and New Spain.

The symbolism of the Navarro coat of arms

Visually striking and protective, the Navarro coat of arms features a deep blue central shield charged with two golden wolves walking in pale (lobos pasantes: one above the other). The inner shield is enclosed within a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight golden saltires (X-shaped crosses). In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the two golden wolves represent fierce courage, acute watchfulness, stealth, and unyielding defense of family territory. The red bordure and eight golden saltires signify martial sacrifice, fortitude, and commemoration of victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and blue feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Navarrese and Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
