The origin of the name Myles

Myles is the primary historical spelling variant of the ancient noble surname Miles (Milo), derived from Latin miles (meaning "soldier" or "knight") or Old Slavic Mil ("beloved"). Introduced to England and Ireland during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the lineage established influential seats across Somerset, Gloucestershire, and Ireland, producing High Sheriffs, judges, and religious scholars.

The symbolism of the Myles coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral bearings of the noble Miles lineage, the Myles coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad golden diagonal band (bend) powdered with black ermine spots, surmounted diagonally by a central argent / silver or white steel sword with a golden hilt in bend. In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the golden bend with ermine spots denotes knightly sashes of honor, judicial purity, and royal favor. The silver steel sword represents knightly readiness, justice, military valor, and armed defense of family territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. Below, the motto scroll displays Sola virtus invicta, translating to "Virtue alone is unconquerable." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Somerset and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Lady Catherine Myles (17th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Somerset land rolls.
