Symbolism of the coat of arms of the Donegal Murray clan
This distinct Murray coat of arms, featuring a griffin in the crest (in contrast to the mermaid on the Scottish Murray Family Crest, also available on this site), was officially formalised in the 19th century by a Royal Licence granted to Alexander Murray. This ensured its registration in Burke’s General Armory and the official records of the Ulster King of Arms. The heraldry of the Murray of Castle Murray branch represents a distinguished variation of the ancient Moray arms, specifically adapted to reflect this Irish lineage. The Azure (blue) shield symbolizes loyalty and truth, and is adorned with three gold stars (mullets) representing divine radiance and noble status.
The griffin is a mythical creature combining the strength of a lion with the vigilance of an eagle. This emblem signifies vigilance, courage, and dual mastery over both land and air. It serves as a bold distinction from the traditional Scottish mermaid, marking this Donegal branch’s unique identity. Beneath the shield lies the Latin motto "Impero," meaning "I command," highlighting the family’s authoritative legacy in the region.
The Origin of the Murray name
The Murray name traces its roots to the Scottish province of Moray, derived from the Old Celtic words mori (sea) and treb (settlement). However, the Donegal branch emerged during the Plantation of Ulster in the early 17th century. This lineage descends from the Murrays of Broughton, established when John Murray of Cockpool was awarded lands in the barony of Boylagh and Banagh around 1610. The family rebuilt the former McSwyne’s Castle into the imposing Castle Murray.
