Symbolism of the Murray Family Crest
The Murray Family Crest stands as an exceptional example of classical Scottish heraldry, distinguished by its striking Azure (blue) shield adorned with three silver (Argent) stars, known as mullets. The blue hue traditionally symbolizes truth and loyalty, values deeply embedded in the Murray lineage. The silver stars are emblematic of the "Stars of Moray," first appearing on the seal of Sir Andrew de Moravia in the late 13th century, signifying a divine quality and a radiant reputation that has endured through centuries.
The crest features a mermaid clutching a mirror and a comb, a unique emblem associated with the Murrays of Stanhope and the Earls of Mansfield. According to the heraldic traditions upheld by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the mermaid embodies eloquence and beauty, while also representing the family's naval heritage and their adeptness at navigating the complex political landscape of Scotland. The mirror and comb reflect prudence and self-reflection, virtues esteemed by the nobility. Beneath the shield lies the motto "Tout prêt" (always ready), officially linked to one of the oldest and most distinguished Murray branches: the Murrays of Philiphaugh.
Artist's note: This design is one of my favorites—not only because the mermaid took careful attention to illustrate but because it represents one of the most aesthetically balanced and elegant coats of arms. Few designs can rival the charm of a mermaid accompanied by three shining stars!
The Origin of the Murray Name
The Murray surname is a territorial name derived from the historic province of Moray in northeast Scotland. Its linguistic roots trace back to the Gaelic "Moireabh," itself originating from the Old Celtic terms mori meaning sea, and treb meaning settlement—together translating to "a settlement by the sea." The earliest recorded Latinized form of the name is "de Moravia."
The lineage is traced back to Freskin, a Flemish nobleman granted substantial lands in Moray by King David I during the 12th century. His descendants adopted the name of their territory, establishing one of the most influential dynasties in the Scottish Highlands.
Notable Historical Figures: Among the esteemed individuals linked to this coat of arms is Sir Andrew Murray, who allied with William Wallace to lead the Scottish forces to victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Another pivotal figure is William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, the 18th-century Lord Chief Justice whose rulings significantly contributed to the abolition of slavery in England.
Formal Registration: The Murray arms are officially recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, first formalized in 1672. However, the emblematic three stars appeared on family seals as early as the Ragman Rolls of 1296, underscoring the family’s longstanding heritage.
A Murray fact: The Murray clan is among the few Scottish families with a continuous, documented lineage tracing back to the early Mormaers (Earls) of the pre-feudal era. This makes their coat of arms one of the oldest and most enduring symbols of Scottish sovereignty and nobility.
