Symbolism of the Murray Family Crest
The Murray Family Crest stands as a distinguished emblem of Scottish heritage, showcasing a striking Azure (blue) shield emblazoned with three silver (Argent) stars, also known as mullets. The blue hue historically symbolizes truth and loyalty, while the silver stars pay homage to the "Stars of Moray." These stars were first documented on the seal of Sir Andrew de Moravia in the late 13th century, representing a divine quality or a "shining" legacy that transcends generations.
At the heart of the crest is a distinctive mermaid holding a mirror and a comb, a hallmark of the Murrays of Stanhope and the Earls of Mansfield. According to the strict heraldic language of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the mermaid symbolizes eloquence and beauty. Additionally, it reflects the family’s maritime heritage and their adeptness in navigating the complex waters of Scottish politics. The mirror and comb represent prudence and self-examination, virtues esteemed by nobility. The motto beneath the shield, ’Tout prêt’ (always ready), is the official motto of the venerable Murrays of Philiphaugh.
Artist's note: This is one of my favourites, not because the mermaid took me ages to draw but because it's just one of the best looking, most lovely coat of arms from a design ballance point of view. Maybe nothing beats a mermaid and three stars!
The origin of the Murray name
The Murray surname is a territorial name originating from the historic province of Moray in northeast Scotland. Its linguistic roots lie in the Gaelic "Moireabh," derived from Old Celtic elements mori (sea) and treb (settlement), meaning "a settlement by the sea." The earliest recorded Latinized version of the name is "de Moravia."
The family lineage traces back to Freskin, a Flemish nobleman who received substantial lands in Moray from King David I during the 12th century. His descendants adopted the name of their new territory, laying the foundation for one of the most powerful dynasties in the Scottish Highlands.
Notable Historical Figures: Among the most significant personalities linked to this coat of arms is Sir Andrew Murray, who allied with William Wallace to command the Scottish forces to victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Another eminent figure is William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, an 18th-century Lord Chief Justice whose rulings significantly advanced the abolition of slavery in England.
Formal Registration: The Murray arms are officially recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, first formalized in 1672. However, the emblematic three stars appeared on family seals as early as the Ragman Rolls of 1296.
Did you know this about the Murrays? The Murray clan is among the rare families that maintain a direct, unbroken lineage from the early Mormaers (Earls) of the pre-feudal age, making their coat of arms one of the oldest and most enduring symbols of Scottish sovereignty.
