Origin of the Murray Name

The surname Murray is a famous Scottish regional name originating from Moray in northeastern Scotland. The root derives from the Old Celtic words mori (sea) and treb (settlement), meaning “a settlement by the sea.” In early Latinized records, it appeared as de Moravia.

The principal lineage traces back to Freskin, a Flemish nobleman who received extensive lands in Moray from King David I in the 12th century. His descendants adopted the name of their territory, establishing one of the most powerful dynasties in the Scottish Highlands.

Among the clan's most famous historical figures is Sir Andrew Murray, who partnered with William Wallace to command the Scottish army at the decisive Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. The Murray clan remains one of the few noble families with an unbroken line of descent from the early pre-feudal Mormaers (Earls) of Scotland.
