The origin of the name Munoz
Munoz (Muñoz) is an ancient Spanish patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Muño" (derived from Basque munio, meaning "hill," "mound," or "fortified place"). Originating during the early Reconquista in the northern mountain kingdoms of Galicia, Asturias, and Castile, the House of Muñoz held premier standing as Counts of Cervellón and Marquis of San Carlos, producing royal commanders, governors, and Knights of Santiago.
The symbolism of the Munoz coat of arms
Visually balanced and chivalric, the Munoz coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad golden chevron set between two golden five-pointed stars (mullets) in chief and an upright argent / silver or white steel sword in base. In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden chevron represents architectural stability and knightly sashes of honor. The two golden stars denote divine illumination and high nobility, while the silver steel sword signifies knightly readiness, justice, and armed defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
