The origin of the name Morrison

Morrison (MacMorrison / Clan Morrison) is an iconic Scottish Highland clan surname derived from Gaelic Mac Gille Mhoire (meaning "son of the servant of the Virgin Mary"). Originating on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the Chiefs of Clan Morrison held the hereditary office of Brieve (Hereditary Celtic Judge) of Lewis for centuries from their island stronghold at Pabbay and Ness. Ruling with judicial authority and naval command, the clan shaped the history of the Western Isles.

The symbolism of the Morrison coat of arms

Rich in Hebridean and sacred iconography, the Morrison coat of arms features a golden shield charged with a central black cross bearing five argent / silver or white fleurs-de-lis (one central, four on the arms). In Scottish heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity and high standing, while the black cross represents unyielding faith, judicial wisdom, and constancy. The five silver fleurs-de-lis denote spiritual purity, devotion to the Virgin Mary, and noble royal favor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver tower resting on a green mount amid ocean waves, surmounted by a bare arm holding a silver sword erect—symbolising island fortress defense (Pabbay), judicial authority, and armed readiness. Below, the motto scroll displays Teaghlach phabbay, translating from Scottish Gaelic to "Family of Pabbay." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Morrison of Ruchdi.
