The origin of the name Morris

Morris is an ancient Welsh, English, and Anglo-Norman surname derived from the medieval personal name Maurice (from Latin Mauritius, meaning "dark-complexioned" or "Moorish"). Expanding rapidly across Wales (Clasemont in Glamorgan) and the English West Country following the Norman Conquest, the House of Morris produced High Sheriffs, Vice-Admirals, and Founding Fathers in North America. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Buckinghamshire (Robert Morys).

The symbolism of the Morris coat of arms

Visually structured and bold, the Morris coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a broad black horizontal zigzag band (fess dancetty), set above a central black lion rampant in base. In heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity and royal favor, while the black fess dancetty represents structural strength, knightly sashes, and navigating turbulent obstacles with fortitude. The black lion rampant denotes supreme courage, deep wisdom, and unyielding constancy under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Glamorgan and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Lady Jane Morris (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Clasemont land rolls.
