The origin of the name Morin
Morin is an ancient Gaelic Irish (Ó Móráin / Morin) and French noble surname of dual heritage. In Ireland, Morin represents an early Anglicised variant of the Mayo and Galway Ó Móráin sept, sharing identical armorial bearings with Moran. In France, the House of Morin held distinguished manorial seats across Normandy, Brittany, and Île-de-France, with early pioneers carrying the name to Quebec and New France in the 17th century.
The symbolism of the Morin coat of arms
Sharing the historical armorial bearings of the ancient Ó Móráin lineage, the Morin coat of arms features a black shield charged with three golden five-pointed stars (mullets: two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the black shield symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and constancy under trial, while the three golden stars denote divine guidance, high intellect, and noble family alignment across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden star set above a coronet, representing high aspiration and heavenly protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Lucent in tenebris, translating to "They shine in darkness." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in European and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
