The origin of the name Morgan
Morgan is an illustrious ancient Welsh surname derived from the Old Welsh personal name Morcant (composed of mor, meaning "sea," and cant, meaning "circle" or "defender"—thus "sea-defender" or "born of the sea"). Tracing direct lineage from Cadifor ap Collwyn, Lord of Dyfed, the House of Morgan established premier seats at Tredegar House in Monmouthshire and across Glamorgan. Ruling as Barons Tredegar, High Sheriffs, and Parliamentarians, the family exerted immense political and industrial power across South Wales and the British Empire. Codified early, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Berkshire (John Morgan).
The symbolism of the Morgan coat of arms
Commanding and guardian-inspired, the Morgan coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central black griffin rampant. In classical Welsh heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and high standing, while the black griffin rampant (a mythic creature combining the eagle and lion) represents acute watchfulness, high intellect, fierce agility, and guardian protection of family territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a stag's head erased with branching red antlers, symbolising forest lordship, swiftness, and keen alertness. Below, the motto scroll displays Fidus et audax, translating to "Faithful and bold." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s 16th-century Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
