The origin of the name Moreno
Moreno is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish moreno (originally an descriptive adjective meaning "dark-complexioned," "swarthy," or "brown-haired"). Originating during the early Reconquista in the mountain realms of Castile, Galicia, and Andalusia, the House of Moreno established prominent manorial seats across Spain and New Spain, producing royal governors, military commanders, and Knights of Calatrava.
The symbolism of the Moreno coat of arms
Commanding and architectural, the Moreno coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central red triple-towered fortress or castle, flanked at the top by two blue and silver swallows or doves in flight facing inward toward the tower. In Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the red castle represents fortress defense, heroic courage, and grand manorial hospitality. The two blue and silver birds in flight denote freedom, swiftness, good tidings, and peaceful return from pilgrimage or crusade. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
