The origin of the name Moran
Moran (O'Moran) is an ancient Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Móráin or Ó Murcháin (meaning "descendant of Mórán," from mór, meaning "great" or "mighty"). Centered in Connacht (specifically County Mayo at Ardnaree and County Galway), the Ó Móráin sept were hereditary chieftains and landholders who ruled along the River Moy. Recorded in early medieval land inquisitions, the family maintained respected standing as military leaders and civic figures across the west of Ireland.
The symbolism of the Moran coat of arms
Visually striking and celestial, the Moran coat of arms features a black shield charged with three golden five-pointed stars (mullets: two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the black shield symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and unyielding constancy under trial, while the three golden stars represent divine illumination, high intellect, hopeful guidance, and noble family alignment. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden star set above a coronet, symbolising high aspiration and heavenly protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Lucent in tenebris, translating to "They shine in darkness." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
