The origin of the name Moore
Moore is an ancient Gaelic Irish and Anglo-Norman surname of dual origin: derived from Gaelic Ó Mórdha (meaning "descendant of Mórdha," or "the majestic/mighty warrior") or Anglo-Norman French de la Mare / de More ("residing near a moor/heath"). As Princes of Leix (County Laois), the Ó Mórdha sept were supreme rulers of one of the Seven Septs of Leix, defending their ancestral midland kingdom from their stronghold at Dunamase Castle. Recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters, the House of Moore produced celebrated Gaelic chieftains, statesmen, and cultural figures.
The symbolism of the Moore coat of arms
Commanding and vibrant, the Moore coat of arms features a green shield charged with a central golden lion rampant set beneath three golden five-pointed stars (mullets) in chief. In Gaelic heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in Irish soil, while the central golden lion rampant represents supreme bravery, royal leadership, and heroic spirit. The three golden stars in chief denote divine guidance, high nobility, and illuminated purpose across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of green and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Conlan abú, translating from Irish Gaelic to "Conlan forever" (the historic battle cry of the Princes of Leix). The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
