The origin of the name Montgomery
Montgomery (de Montgomery / Clan Montgomery) is an illustrious Anglo-Norman and Scottish noble clan surname derived from Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery in Calvados, Normandy. Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest by Roger de Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, the family established vast lordships in Ayrshire (Eglinton Castle), Scotland, rising to Earls of Eglinton. Serving as Great Justiciars, High Constables, and generals, the clan shaped British and international history.
The symbolism of the Montgomery coat of arms
Commanding and allegorical, the Montgomery coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden fleurs-de-lis (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three golden fleurs-de-lis represent royal Anglo-Norman favor, French heritage, spiritual purity, and high nobility across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a female figure (representing Hope or Justice) in classic draped blue garments holding a steel anchor in her right hand and a severed savage's head in her left hand—symbolising steadfast hope, maritime readiness, victory over barbarism and adversity, and vigilant justice. Below, the motto scroll displays Garde bien, translating from French to "Guard well." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for the Earls of Eglinton and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
