The origin of the name Mitchell

Mitchell (Michell / MacMichael) is an ancient English, Scottish, and Irish surname derived from the medieval personal name Michael (derived from Hebrew Mikha'el, meaning "Who is like God?"). Establishing early seats in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire (Scotland), Yorkshire (England), and Connacht/Ulster (Ireland), the family produced High Sheriffs, naval commanders, scholars, and parliamentary leaders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (John Michell).

The symbolism of the Mitchell coat of arms

Commanding and celestial, the Mitchell coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad wavy golden horizontal band (fess wavy) bearing a central red crescent set between two red six-pointed stars (mullets), set between three golden lozenges or mascles (two in chief, one in base).
