The origin of the name Miranda
Miranda (de Miranda) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the town and valley of Miranda in Asturias, Galicia, or Navarre (originating from Latin miranda, meaning "worthy of admiration" or "viewpoint/watchtower"). Originating during the early Reconquista, the House of Miranda held premier aristocracy as Counts of Miranda and Lords of San Cruz, producing military commanders, admirals, and diplomats who expanded across Spain and the Americas.
The symbolism of the Miranda coat of arms
Visually complex and protective, the Miranda coat of arms features a shield partitioned quarterly: the 1st and 4th green quarters are charged with a central golden griffin rampant; the 2nd and 3rd argent / silver or white quarters display a green oak tree on a mount with a walking silver wolf at its base. The entire shield is set within a black border (bordure) charged with eight silver stars and small side shields (inescutcheons). In Iberian heraldry, the green quarters and golden griffin symbolise vitality, hope, fierce watchfulness, high intellect, and guardian power. The silver quarters, oak tree, and wolf represent sincerity, ancient land tenure, enduring wisdom, and untamed martial fortitude. The black bordure with silver stars denotes deep wisdom, constancy, divine guidance, and territorial defense. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of green and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Asturian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
