The origin of the name Mills

Mills (Mill / Mylles) is an ancient English occupational and topographic surname derived from Old English myln (referring to an ancestor who owned, operated, or resided near a manorial grain mill). Originating with master millers who performed essential duties in feudal agricultural life, the House of Mills established influential landed estates across Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Richard de la Mielle).

The symbolism of the Mills coat of arms

Visually pure and industrial, the Mills coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield powdered with black ermine spots, charged with a central golden fer-de-moline or millrind (the iron centerpiece used to support a millstone). In classical heraldry, the silver field with ermine spots symbolises sincerity, peace, unblemished honor, and judicial purity. The golden millrind serves as an iconic canting emblem representing master craftsmanship, structural support, industrial stability, and the ability to hold together family assets. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver sea-lion rampant holding a golden millrind in its paws, symbolising maritime command, courageous strength, and preservation of heritage. Below, the motto scroll displays Honor virtutis pretium, translating to "Honor is the reward of virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Kent and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Lady Florence Mills (18th Century): Recorded noblewoman and benefactor in Sussex estate rolls.
