The origin of the name Miles

Miles is a widely respected English and Norman surname derived from the Latin miles (meaning "soldier" or "knight") and the Germanic personal name Milo. Introduced to Great Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, prominent family seats were established across Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Essex. Early ancestral records appear in the 1086 Domesday Book under Miles Crispin, a major feudal landowner, as well as John Miles in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Bedfordshire.

The symbolism of the Miles coat of arms

The Miles coat of arms features a bold gules (red) shield charged with two gold diagonal bendlets bearing black ermine spots, enclosing a central silver sword with a golden hilt. In heraldry, gules signifies warrior fortitude and martial sacrifice, while the ermine spots represent royal dignity and unblemished honor.

The central silver sword symbolizes chivalric justice, military readiness, and the righteous defense of family and realm. The gold ermine bendlets convey architectural strength and unyielding loyalty.

Framed by flowing red and gold mantling, the crest features striking red and gold feather plumes set upon a coronet. Anchoring the design, the gold scroll bears the inspiring Latin motto Sola virtus invicta ("Virtue alone is unconquerable"). Documented in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory.
