Meyer (Meier / Meyer von Knonau) is an ancient Germanic, Swiss, and Dutch status and occupational surname derived from Middle High German meiger (meaning "steward," "bailiff," or "chief administrator" of a manorial estate or agricultural domain). Widespread across Germany, Switzerland, and the Low Countries during the early Middle Ages, families bearing the name rose from estate managers to patrician magistrates, scholars, and landholders. Codified early in municipal charters, the name appears in 1260 Zurich rolls (Johannes Meyer).
The symbolism of the Meyer coat of arms
