The origin of the name Mendoza
Mendoza (de Mendoza) is one of the most famous and powerful Spanish grandee noble surnames in world history, derived from Basque mendi-otza (meaning "cold mountain"). Originating in Álava in the Basque Country, the House of Mendoza rose to supreme aristocracy as Dukes of Infantado, Marquis of Santillana, and Viceroys of New Spain and Peru. Dominating Golden Age Spain, members served as Cardinal Primate of Spain, royal ambassadors, generals, and celebrated poets.
The symbolism of the Mendoza coat of arms
Heroic and historic, the Mendoza coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad green diagonal band (bend) bordered in gold, over which is an inner golden chain formed in an orle pattern. In Spanish heraldry, the red field symbolises martial sacrifice and fortitude, while the green bend bordered in gold denotes hope, vitality, and knightly sashes of royal favor. The golden chain represents the historic victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), unbreakable family unity, and heroic defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of green and red feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Spanish grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
