The origin of the name Mejia
Mejia (Mejía / Mexía) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname originating in Galicia and Castile during the early Middle Ages. Establishing ancestral seats at Santa Eufemia and Ciudad Real, the House of Mejía produced Knights of Santiago, Royal Chancellors, and commanders who expanded across Andalusia and New Spain during the Reconquista, establishing major landed estates throughout the Americas.
The symbolism of the Mejia coat of arms
Visually bold and geometric, the Mejia coat of arms features a shield barry of gold and deep blue (a field divided into alternating horizontal bars of gold and blue). In classical heraldry, the gold bars symbolise generosity, high honor, and royal favor, while the deep blue bars represent loyalty, truth, and faith. The balanced horizontal pattern denotes architectural strength, knightly sashes of honor, and structural stability under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation.
