The origin of the name Medina

Medina (de Medina / Medina-Sidonia) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the Arabic word madinat (meaning "city") or cities like Medina del Campo, Medina-Sidonia, and Medina de Rioseco. Originating in Castile and Andalusia during the early Middle Ages, the House of Medina held premier aristocracy as Dukes of Medina-Sidonia and Dukes of Medinaceli. Serving as Spanish Grand Admirals, Viceroys, and Governors, members of the family shaped global Iberian history.

The symbolism of the Medina coat of arms

Visually regal and luminous, the Medina coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central red lion rampant. In classical Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the red lion rampant represents supreme martial bravery, heroic leadership, and sovereign Castilian authority. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation, victory, and high honor. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, 7th Duke of Medina-Sidonia (1550–1615): Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish Armada.
Doña María de Medina (17th Century): Spanish noblewoman and philanthropist recorded in Seville charters.
José Toribio Medina (1852–1930): Famed bibliographer, historian, and scholar.
