The origin of the name McKinney

McKinney (MacKinney / Mac Choinnich) is an ancient Gaelic Scottish and Ulster-Scots surname meaning "son of Kenneth" (derived from Cionaodh, meaning "born of fire" or "handsome"). Associated as a sept with Clan MacKenzie of Ross-shire in the Scottish Highlands, families bearing the name settled extensively across Ulster (County Antrim, Tyrone, and Derry) during the 17th century, where they established respected seats as landholders, merchants, and civic leaders.

The symbolism of the McKinney coat of arms

Visually pure and forest-inspired, the McKinney coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central golden stag's (hart's) head caboshed (facing directly forward) with golden antlers. In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden stag's head facing forward denotes acute alertness, forest lordship, peaceful harmony, and royal Clan MacKenzie heritage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, representing noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Je suis prest, translating from French to "I am ready." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in Scottish and Irish armorial registers and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
