The origin of the name McGregor
McGregor (MacGregor / Clan Gregor) is one of the most famous royal Gaelic clan surnames in Scottish history, derived from Mac Griogair (meaning "son of Gregor," tracing direct descent from Griogar, son of King Alpin of Scotland). Known by their proud clan motto "Royal is my race" ('S ríoghal mo dhream), the Chiefs of Clan Gregor held ancestral lands across Glenorchy, Loch Awe, and Balquhidder. Outlawed for generations during border conflicts, the clan survived through legendary martial resilience under folk heroes like Rob Roy MacGregor.
The symbolism of the McGregor coat of arms
Visually iconic and royal, the McGregor coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with an uprooted green oak tree in bend, surmounted diagonally by a silver steel sword with a golden hilt, piercing or crowned at the point with a red royal crown in chief. In Scottish heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity and peace, while the rooted green oak tree represents ancient vitality, land tenure, and unyielding endurance. The silver sword piercing a red royal crown signifies royal Alpinian lineage, supreme martial bravery, and armed defense of the Crown. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden lion's head crowned with an open golden coronet, symbolising regal majesty and courage. Below, the motto scroll displays 'S ríoghal mo dhream, translating from Scottish Gaelic to "Royal is my race."
