The origin of the name McGlynn
McGlynn (MacGlynn / Mag Fhloinn) is an ancient Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Mag Fhloinn (meaning "son of Flann," or "the ruddy/red-complexioned warrior"). Establishing ancestral seats in the Midlands (Westmeath and Longford) and Connacht (Galway and Roscommon), the clan held hereditary chieftainships and land grants recorded in early monastic registries. Defending their lordships through centuries of medieval conflict, the McGlynns produced scholars, clerics, and civic leaders.
The symbolism of the McGlynn coat of arms
Visually pure and imperial, the McGlynn coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black eagle displayed with spread wings, golden beak, and claws. In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black eagle displayed represents high intellect, imperial vision, unyielding strength, and noble elevation. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of black and silver feathers, symbolising noble standing and light.
