The origin of the name McDaniel
McDaniel is an ancient Gaelic Irish and Scottish patronymic surname serving as a phonetic Anglicisation of Mac Domhnaill (meaning "son of Donald," from Domhnall, meaning "world ruler"). Sharing direct ancestral bloodlines with the royal Clan Donald and MacDonnells of Antrim, families bearing the McDaniel spelling established influential seats across Ulster and North America, producing military officers, statesmen, and landholders.
The symbolism of the McDaniel coat of arms
Rich in Hebridean and royal Gaelic iconography, the McDaniel coat of arms features a shield partitioned quarterly: the 1st silver quarter bears a red lion rampant; the 2nd golden quarter displays an arm issuing from a cloud holding a blue cross crosslet fitchee; the 3rd golden quarter bears a lymphad galley with oars in action; the 4th green quarter features a silver salmon swimming. In Gaelic heraldry, the silver field and red lion symbolise sincerity and supreme courage. The arm holding a cross crosslet fitchee represents sacred Christian devotion, while the lymphad galley denotes sea power, island lordship, and maritime command. The silver salmon represents ancient Gaelic wisdom (Éigne) and river tenure. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Toujours pret, translating from French to "Always ready." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
