The origin of the name McCurdy

McCurdy (MacCurdy / MacKirdy) is an ancient Gaelic Scottish and Irish clan surname derived from Mac Mhuircheartaigh (meaning "son of Muircheartach," or "sea-ruler" / "naval navigator"). Originating on the Isle of Bute and Arran in Scotland, the family held the hereditary tenancy of the Royal Demesne of Bute under the Scottish Crown. Facing religious and political turmoil in the 17th century, five McCurdy brothers escaped Bute in an open boat, settling in County Antrim (Ulster), where the family flourished as landholders and civic leaders.

The symbolism of the McCurdy coat of arms

Commanding and symbolic, the McCurdy coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess arched: the upper gold section is charged with a white and blue bird resting; the lower dark section displays an upright green oak tree on a mount, surmounted by a silver steel sword in bend piercing a golden crown. In heraldry, the golden upper field denotes generosity, while the blue and white bird represents peace and divine tidings. The lower section's green oak tree symbolises enduring vitality, land tenure, and ancient wisdom, while the silver sword piercing a golden crown represents heroic defense of sovereignty and unyielding royal allegiance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green dragon with wings displayed, symbolising formidable guardianship and ancient power. Below, the motto scroll displays Dieu et mon pays, translating from French to "God and my country." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in Scottish and Irish armorial registers.
